One of the goals of the Portage Soccer Club is to prepare players for high school soccer. It’s a daunting task for many as the talent and competition can be tough at that age. While many want to play at the level, not everyone is fortune enough to do so. Likewise, many players dream of playing past high school at the collegiate level. Less than 10% of all high school players advance to that next level.
The Portage Soccer Club is proud to announce that eight of our seniors will be moving on to play College Soccer. These are An & Binh Le, Michaela Pope, Darrien Leach, Paige Berg, Todd Shelly, Collin Sweet and Addy Cooper.
An Le will be attending Yale University majoring in Biology and plans on attending medical school. He played 10 years with the Portage Soccer Club. During this time, he played at the Select, Elite, Premier and MRL levels. He has also played 4 years with the Portage Central High School Varsity Mustang program where he was named Captain his senior year and earned All Conference, All District and All State honors in his junior and senior years. In his 4 years, he totaled 44 goals and 26 assists. In 2014, he was named Kalamazoo Gazette boys soccer player of the year.
Binh Le will be attending MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) where he will be majoring in either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. He plans to graduate and pursue a career as an Engineer. He played 10 years with the Portage Soccer Club. During this time he played at the Select, Elite, Premier and MRL levels. He was also played 4 years with the Portage Central High School Mustang Varsity program where he received All Conference, All District and All State honors in his senior year. In his 4 years, he totaled 8 goals and 25 assists as a central defensive midfielder.
Michaela Pope will be attending Siena Heights University where she will be majoring in Psychology. After graduating she plans to continue her education and eventually pursuing a career as a Sports Psychologist. She played nine of her ten years travel with the Portage Soccer Club and one year with Grand Rapids Crew Juniors. During this time she played at the Select, Elite Premier and MRL levels. She is currently starting her 4th years with the Portage Central High School Varsity Mustang program where they earned two District Championships. In addition to club and high school, she played US SuperY for several years where she won the u14 National Championship.
Paige Berg will be attending University of St. Francis where she will be majoring in Business Management. Initially with the Kalamazoo Soccer Club and after guest playing with the Portage Soccer Club for several years, she spent the past two years with us playing on the Portage SC 97 team. During this time, she played at the Select, Elite and Premier levels. She is in her 4th year with Parchment High School Varsity Panthers Program where she earned all conference and all district honors. Paige has lettered in two other varsity sports including Basketball and Track where she was named All State in 100M and 200M Dash.
Darrien Leach will be playing for Bethel College where she will be majoring in Chemistry. She plans on graduating and pursuing a career as a Forensic Pathologist. She has spent the last 3 years with the Portage Soccer Club and has also starting her 4th year as a starter with Three Rivers High School Wildcats. She was recognized with 2013 and 2014 Wolverine Conference Honorable Mention. Prior to playing with Portage Soccer Club she played with both Kingdom and Sting.
Todd Shelly will be playing for Spring Arbor University where he will be majoring in computer science. He is currently in his 9th year with the Portage Soccer club where he has played at the Select, Elite, Premier and MRL levels. He played varsity soccer at Marcellus High School where he received Class D All-State Honorable Mention as a Sophomore and 2nd Team his Junior and Senior years. Academically he has a 3.96 gpa, is the Valedictorian of his class at Marcellus High School and has been a member of the Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society.
Collin Sweet will be playing for Kalamazoo College. He has played with the Portage Soccer Club since his freshman year. During his travel experience he has played at the Select, Elite, Premier and MRL levels. He played varsity soccer at Portage Northern High School.
Addy Cooper will be attending Defiance College where she will be majoring in Athletic Training. She eventually plans to continue on and become a physical therapist. She has played with the Portage Soccer Club the last five years. During this time she has played at the Select, Elite and Premier levels. She currently in her fourth year with the Three Rivers Wild Cats Varsity Soccer Program.
